FAQs
Will there be pain during the procedure?

Local anesthesia (eye drops or gel) will be given before the procedure to help block discomfort during surgery.  There may be an occasional feeling of pressure while the surgery is being performed.  Eye drops and non-prescription pain medication should take care of any possible discomfort during the post-operative healing process.

What can I expect after the procedure?

You will need someone to drive you home after the procedure.  Post-operative care will include eye drops, wearing of glasses, shields and the use of non-prescription pain medication.

What is the recovery period like?

Recovery is generally short, with full healing occurring within 4-6 weeks of the surgery.  Most patients have noticeable improvement in their vision from the day of surgery onward.  We expect the vision to improve daily and it may take a few days before the vision reaches its full potential.

Are these procedures covered by my medical insurance?

Cataract surgery is covered. However, elective procedures like Refractive Lens Exchange and Phakic IOL are non-insured service and is not covered by Medicare.  However, check with your insurance provider to review your personal coverage.

What if I forget to ask a question?

At the Halifax Vision Centre we want our patients to be well informed before surgery. We recommend you write down your questions prior to your initial visit. Should you have questions afterwards we will be happy to answer them in person, by phone, fax or e-mail.
